A vehicle's cooling system protects the engine from the extreme temperatures that occur as a result of spark plugs igniting fuel. It keeps the engine at around the same temperature, which prevents unnecessary emission from being released due to underheating. It also prevents the engine from getting too hot and destroying itself.
Corrosion Problems
Over time, corrosion will begin to build up in a vehicle's cooling system. This corrosion leads to clogging and eventually an overheating engine. Having a cooling system flushed and refilled is helpful protection against the threat of corrosion.
Leak Problems
When leaks occur but you can't find the area of leakage, tests can be done to identify the problem. A combustion leak test reveals if gasses from your vehicle's exhaust are inside your radiator. If so, a head gasket failure is often the reason.
Expert Advice
The National Automotive Radiator Service Association urges drivers to have their cooling systems checked using a system that's designed to check seven key areas. A thermostat and engine fan test are examples of these.
