How to Get Condensation Out of Headlights Yourself at Home

Condensation in your cars headlights can be highly bothersome. Not only can in impair the clarity of your headlights while driving at night, the moisture can damage the lights wiring and continue to weaken the sealant around the headlight enclosure. Fixing this condensation problem is a simple process that will allow you to get back out on the road again in no time.

    Look through your cars owners manual for headlight dismantling instructions. The manual will often illustrate the locations of bolts, screws and clips holding the enclosure in place, and can also highlight the wiring diagrams and offer safety tips.

    With your car turned off, open the hood of your car and position the latch securely.

    Locate the headlight enclosures and use the wrench set to unscrew the bolts, screws and clips associated with them. Keep these pieces in a small container to ensure they are not lost.

    Being to dismantle the headlight assembly, removing all the bulbs and wiring. With the bolts, screws and clips removed, taking the assembly apart should only require pushing and pulling of the various components until they detach from each other. Repeat for the other headlight assembly.

    Turn on your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit and dampen a piece of wet cardboard.

    Put the cardboard in the oven once it has reached 250 degrees Fahrenheit and place the headlight covers, without the bulbs and wiring, on top of the cardboard. Close the door and bake for three minutes. You may use a hairdryer in place of the oven, or set the headlight covers out in direct sunlight.

    After three minutes, turn off the oven and remove the headlight covers. They will be hot, but all of the condensation should be gone. Let them cool.

    Begin to reassemble both headlight assemblies, once the headlight covers have cooled, using the bulbs and wiring that were removed. Use the bolts, screws and clips to reassemble the enclosure.

    Use silicone auto sealant around the headlights gaskets to ensure that moisture is unable to enter the headlight and condensation no longer builds up.
