How to Remove Brake Rotors on a 2001 Chevy Cavalier

When it comes time to do the brakes on your Cavalier, you'll want to do more than just change the pads. That's because the pads need a smooth, clean surface on which to push against, meaning that you need either your stock rotors turned or replaced entirely. This isn't too difficult to do and can be done in about 15 minutes per side. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.

Instructions

    1

Use the jack to lift up the front of the vehicle then set it on jack stands. Be sure that the vehicle is completely and solidly on the stands prior to working on the vehicle. Take off the front wheels with the tire iron.

    2

Unbolt the brake caliper with the brake pads still attached using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Then loop the heavy-duty wire through the front springs and the front caliper to support the weight of the caliper itself.

    3

Pull the brake rotor off of the front hub by hand. If the rotor is stuck on the hub, hit it from the backside with a hammer.
