The Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1967, produced using many parts from the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. The 1997 Pontiac Firebird was produced as a two-door coupe and as a two-door convertible. Both coupe and convertible models were available as a base model and in the Formula trim package. The base model was equipped with a 3.8-liter V-6, while the 1997 Formula Firebird was equipped with a 5.7-liter V-8. The dimmer switch inside the 1997 Firebird shares the same circuit panel as the headlight switch. Both items must be replaced together.
Instructions
- 1
Lower the steering wheel inside the driver's compartment. Wrap a rag around the tip of a flat-head screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver between the instrument cluster trim pate bezel and the dashboard. Pry the trim plate off of the dashboard, starting at the farthest point on the driver's side of the truck. Remove the trim plate from the dash, prying it slightly every few inches with your screwdriver.
2Pull the instrument panel and headlight dimmer switch from the dashboard, using your flat-head screwdriver to unsnap the switch panel if needed. Disconnect the two electrical connectors on the rear of the dimmer and headlight switch panel.
3Install the electrical connectors onto the new dimmer and headlight switch panel by hand. Push the switch panel into the dashboard by hand until the switch panel clicks and locks into the dashboard.
4Push the instrument cluster bezel plate firmly against the dashboard and cluster area by hand. Make sure the bezel is properly aligned so that you do not break any of the locator pins. Push the bezel back onto the dashboard completely, until the entire bezel is secured.
