How to Change Ignition Wires on a 2000 Impala

The 2000 Chevy Impala uses a distributor-less ignition system that uses an ignition coil to supply spark to a pair of cylinders. This three-coil, six-cylinder, ignition system has proven durable over the years with simple spark plug replacement being the only scheduled maintenance. Over time, the plug wires that attach the coils to the spark plugs will require replacement, but this is a simple "remove and replace" procedure that the home mechanic can complete in about an hour.

Instructions

    1

Remove the plug wire from the number two cylinder's spark plug. Use a small screwdriver to separate the plastic plug wire looms located along the length of the wire and unplug it from the coil. Remove the old plug wire from the engine compartment.

    2

Compare the length of the old plug wire to the three longer wires in the new set and select the one that is the closest match. Install the new plug wire onto the spark plug and route the wire along the path that the original took. Snap the plug wire onto the coil and position the length of the wire in the looms. Repeat this process for the remaining two plug wires on this side of the engine.

    3

The rear three plug wires on this model can be accessed by reaching over the alternator to unplug them. Use a small screwdriver to unsnap the plug wire looms and remove the plug wire closest to the passenger side of the engine compartment. Install the new wire, after selecting the correct length, and repeat the process for the remaining two wires on the back of the engine compartment. Snap the plug wires into the looms and close the looms around them.
