How to Remove the Headlight on a 1996 Ford F250

The 1996 was the second to last model year for the ninth generation of the Ford F250. Prior to its complete redesign in 1998, the 1996 F250 already had several features incorporated into the 10th generation, including the halogen headlight system. Halogen bulbs burn brighter and last longer than their sealed-beam predecessors. When handling a halogen bulb, never contact the bulb's glass with your bare skin, as oils in your flesh adhere to the bulb, then superheat and create micro-fractures in the glass when the bulb turns on. These micro-fractures lead to premature bulb failure, which is often instantaneous.

Instructions

    1

Open the F250's hood. Reach behind the headlight with the burned-out bulb and grab the wiring connector. Pull the connector straight backward to remove it from the bulb socket.

    2

Turn the bulb socket retaining ring 1/8-turn counterclockwise to unlock it. Slide the retaining ring off and set it aside.

    3

Pull the old bulb and socket straight backward to remove from the headlamp assembly. Pull the old bulb out of the socket and discard it.

    4

Put a clean glove on the hand you will use to handle the new 9003 Halogen bulb. Remove the bulb from its packaging.

    5

Push the bulb into the socket until it locks into place. The bulb has slots on it that align with grooves in the socket for a proper fit.

    6

Slide the new bulb and socket into the headlamp assembly. Install the bulb socket retaining ring and turn it clockwise until it locks into place. Plug the wiring connector into the base of the socket.

    7

Close the F250's hood. Test the headlights before operating the F250.
