How to Install a Throttle Position Sensor on a 2001 Grand Am

The Pontiac Grand Am was introduced in 1973. The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am came equipped with a 2.4-liter, in-line four-cylinder engine in the base model. A 3.4-liter V-6 was an available upgrade for the 2001 Grand Am. The throttle position sensor sends a signal the the engine control unit. The ECU makes adjustments to the engine timing, fuel regulation, and other aspects, based upon the position of the throttle. The TPS is mounted in the throttle body of the 2001 Grand Am, directly across from the throttle control cables.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the Grand Am, and set the hood prop. Remove the lid from the air filter housing, by loosening the Phillips (3 Head) retaining screws and pulling the housing lid off, by hand. Loosen the hose clamp from the air intake tube, where it is joined to the throttle body. Remove the air intake tube from the engine compartment.

    2

Remove the electrical connector that is attached to the throttle body, using your hands. This connector is the TPS connector. Loosen the two small mounting bolts for the TPS, using a Torx bit or star-bit hand driver. Use a small Phillips screwdriver (1 Head) if the bolt has Phillips slots. Remove the bolts by hand and set them in a safe place, so that you do not lose them.

    3

Pull the TPS horizontally out of the throttle body, by hand. Install the new TPS into the mounting hole in the throttle body, by pushing it in horizontally with your hand. Insert the two mounting bolts by hand and turn the bolts three or four turns, to ensure proper threading.

    4

Tighten the TPS mounting bolts with a Torx driver or 1 Phillips screwdriver, until the bolts are snug. This is not a moving part of the vehicle, so no torque is necessary to hold the part in place, and adding torque can damage the new TPS. Install the electrical connector onto the new TPS.

    5

Install the air intake tube onto the throttle body, and tighten the clamp using a ratchet and socket. Tighten the part only until it is snug. Install the air filter housing lid, at the other end of the air intake tube. Tighten the screws on the filter housing with the 3 Phillips-head screwdriver, until the screws are snug.
