How to Clean Brake Proportioning Valves

Brake proportioning valves are responsible for altering the rate of pressure to the back brakes are found close to the back break line. The valve also controls the amount of brake fluid that is distributed to the brakes through the brake line. After continued use, the valve might pick up debris or brake fluid that is built up. If so, it should be cleaned to ensure it works properly. You only need a few products to clean the brake proportioning valve.

    Raise the vehicle up with a jack to make it easier to access the brake proportioning valve. Support all four corners of the chassis with a jack stand.

    Peer under the vehicle near the rear brake line. Find the brake proportioning valve, which is "L" shaped with a rubber button on it.

    Pour a small quantity of carburetor or brake cleaner on a clean rag. There is not a cleaner that is specifically made for brake proportioning valves, but carburetor or brake cleaner is safe to use, according to "Auto Repair for Dummies." Thoroughly wipe the valve with the cloth until all the debris is removed.

    Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
