How to Remove a 1998 Ford Mustang Fuel Pump

The 1998 Ford Mustang is part of the fourth generation of Mustangs. It features a 4.6-liter, eight-cylinder engine. The electrical fuel pump sits in the fuel tank, which you must remove to reach the fuel pump. The fuel tank is difficult and tedious to remove because you must remove other components to access the tank. Expect the entire job to take a few hours.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable in the engine compartment.

    2

Open the trunk. Pull up the trim from the driver's side of the trunk. Pull apart the inertia switch connectors. Turn on the Mustang several times for a few seconds each time until the engine stalls. This signals that the fuel system is no longer pressurized.

    3

Open the gas cap. Remove the three screws around the gas filler pipe grommet. Remove the four screws from the gas filler pipe retaining bracket in the trunk. Gently pull out the gas filler pipe.

    4

Raise the Mustang with your car jack and set two jack stands in front of the rear axle of the Mustang.

    5

Disconnect the fuel hose with the 3/8 inch quick disconnect tool. Insert the tool between the metal prongs of the fitting and the hose. Pull off the hose. Repeat this process for the vapor hose with the 5/16 inch quick disconnect tool.

    6

Set the floor jack below the gas tank. Remove the front gas tank strap from the tank. Let part of the tank rest on the floor jack. Remove the other fuel lines and electrical connectors from the fuel pump revealed when you lowered part of the tank. Remove the last strap to set the tank on the floor jack.

    7

Remove the six bolts from the locking ring around the fuel pump with your socket wrench and ratchet. Pull the ring off the tank. Lift the fuel pump up slightly. Reach below it. Press in on the side tabs of the fuel pump module to release the module from the tank.
