The Mitsubishi Galant is one of the few vehicles that doesn't have the parking brake system incorporated into the rear disc brakes. This means that the rear and front brake systems operate the same way, making them easy to replace.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Drain half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Use a syringe to siphon half of the fluid from the reservoir. Set it aside to replace any necessary fluid after you replace the brakes.
2Raise the Galant from the ground using a car jack. Support the vehicle on all sides. Check for any children or animals that may crawl under the car.
3Disassemble the wheel assembly. Loosen the lug nuts with a torque wrench and remove the wheel. Set is on the ground face up to prevent damage.
4Take off the caliper guide and lock pins, and then remove the caliper assembly from the caliper support. Secure the caliper with wire to keep it out of your way.
5Withdraw the brake pads, spring clips and shims. Keep the disc on the hub by putting the wheel lug nuts onto the studs without over tightening.
Installation
- 6
Compress the piston in the bore using a C-clamp. Grease the areas that slide together using silicone based grease.
7Install the new brake pads, shims and spring clips onto the caliper support. Position the caliper over the brake pads.
8Lubricate the caliper guide and locking pins. Install in the position they were before removal.
9Use a torque wrench to tighten the guide and locking pins to 20 ft. lb. and then remove the C-clamp. Replace the wheel assembly and lower the Galant to the ground. Check the brake fluid level and verify that the brakes function properly.
