How to Replace 2006 Xb Scion Front Brakes

Replacing the front brakes on the Scion Xb is a project that you can do in your driveway. It is not a difficult procedure and each wheel will take only about 30 minutes to complete. It is important that you be able to handle as much of the regular maintenance on the Scion yourself that you can, which can help prevent you from paying for the work at a repair shop. You should inspect the rotors at the same time you are changing your brake pads.

Instructions

    1

Park the Scion on a level surface and turn off the ignition. Pop and secure the hood. Locate the master brake cylinder on the back firewall, on the driver's side of the car. Siphon one-half of the brake fluid from the cylinder, using the turkey baster. Place the fluid in the drain pan to recycle later.

    2

Place a set of wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Scion. Loosen the wheel's lug nuts with a lug wrench. Raise the car with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under it, near the jacking point, and raise it to the frame. Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Pull the wheel off the car.

    3

Loosen the caliper retaining pins with a socket and ratchet. Pull the caliper from the wheel assembly. Remove the brake pads from the caliper. Insert the piston tool into the caliper and turn it in until the piston seats itself within the caliper housing.

    4

Insert the new brake pads and retainer clips into the caliper. Place the caliper on the mounting bracket and tighten the retaining pins with the socket and ratchet. Place the wheel on the car and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Repeat the process on the other wheel. Remove the jack stand from under the Scion and lower the car to the ground with the jack.

    5

Add brake fluid to the master cylinder to bring it to the proper level. Pump the brakes several times until the brake pedal is firm.
