How to Remove a Caliper on the 2003 Honda Odyssey

A defective brake caliper can cause uncontrollable swerving during attempts to stop your Odyssey. Damage to the caliper occurs most often from over-compressing its piston during a brake pad replacement. It can also fail from driving extended periods with badly worn brake pads. Honda classifies frequent vehicle use as short driving trips that are less than 10 miles in any weather condition. Under this classification, your 2003 Odyssey's brake system requires inspection or service every six months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.

Instructions

    1

Apply the emergency brake on your Odyssey. Slightly loosen the lug nuts on the front driver's side tire, using a lug wrench.

    2

Place a car jack beneath the frame rail, behind the tire, and raise the car 10 to 12 inches. Set a jack stand on the right side of the car jack, to help with supporting the weight of the car.

    3

Loosen and remove all of the lug nuts. Slide the tire off the lug studs and roll it away from your working space. Store the lug nuts in a bag or cup to keep them free of dirt and debris.

    4

Remove the banjo-bolt holding the brake line in place, using an adjustable wrench. Pull the line from its position and quickly clog it with a brake hose plug.

    5

Remove the two caliper mounting bolts, using your socket wrench. Lift the caliper up and off your brake rotor.
