How to Use a Brake Line Flaring Tool

The brake line flaring tool consists of two mechanical parts, the hinged flaring bar that clamps onto and holds the brake line in place and the flaring tool that has a cone-like tip that widens the mouth of the brake line as it is tightened. Other parts of the flaring tool kit include several dual-purpose black adapters that measure the appropriate length of brake line and bell out the mouth of the line to prevent cracks during the flaring process.

Instructions

    1

Position the flaring bar so the conical recess sits outward toward the cut end of the brake line. Insert the pipe through the correct sized hole on the hinged flaring bar.

    2

Set the black adapter that reflects your pipe size with the flat side down beside the brake line. The adapter has a step on it used to gauge the correct length of brake line protruding from the flaring bar. The brake line should sit flush with the height of the first step.

    3

Tighten the flaring bar to hold the brake line in place. Turn the adapter over so the pin goes inside the brake line.

    4

Slide the flaring tool onto the flaring bar, inserting the tip of the tool into the adapter. Tighten down the bolt to the flaring tool so the tool compresses the anvil flush against the flaring bar.

    5

Loosen the flaring tool enough to remove the adapter. The brake line should have a bell-mouth end that will help reduce cracks while you flare the brake line.

    6

Reposition the flaring tool with the tip in the mouth of the brake line. Tighten the tool until it will go no further. Do not force the tool since this will cause the flare to crack.

    7

Loosen the flaring tool, remove the tool from the flaring bar and remove the flaring bar. The flared end of the brake line should be perfectly round and centered.
