Hello, and thanks for reading our January '09 edition of the
SourceForge.net update.
Earlier this month, we deployed some refinements to our redesigned Tracker,
upon suggestion from users in the community feedback forums. Also, you may
notice a few more areas of the site with our new look-and-feel, which we
plan to continue refining on an ongoing basis. Designing a new UI is hard
work, and we appreciate everyone who has taken the time to share their
thoughts with us.
As promised, our list of hosted applications for projects is continuing to
grow! In the month of January, we launched support for Gallery, Laconica,
TaskFreak!, Trac and WordPress. At the risk of sounding like a broken
record, I'll say (again) that you should check it out! It's really cool.
Read more in the Hosted App section of this newsletter.
We're also working hard on some of the larger details (and some of the
smaller ones, too) of this year's Community Choice Awards program, and we
hope to be able to share our plans with you very soon.
Around the beginning of February, we'll be pleased to announce our February
Project of the Month, ZK -- Simply Ajax and Mobile. If you're a fan of ZK,
drop us a line at spreadtheword at sourceforge.net and tell us why!
Have a great February.

== Project Infrastructure Service Changes ==
The SourceForge.net team has the service offering on a continuous
improvement cycle -- we're always looking to add useful new features and
refine the existing features to be more functional. We've made a number of
recent service changes. As we make changes in the future, we plan to post
announcements to the Site Status page at:
http://sourceforge.net/sitestatus/
Recent changes include:
* Self-service CVS repository management, allowing project teams direct
filesystem access to manage their repository contents.
Read more: http://sourceforge.net/community/forum/topic.php?id=4286
* Project web quotas eliminated.
Read more: http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/sitedocs/wiki/Disk%20quotas
* Project MySQL databases may now be accessed over the Internet, for ease
of management.
Read more:
http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/sitedocs/wiki/Direct%20MySQL%20access%20over%20the%20Internet
Your feedback is welcome. We're always on the lookout for better ways to
serve your needs.
== Hosted Apps ==
Last year, we announced a new service that provides a number of popular
Open Source applications on an opt-in basis. To date, more than a thousand
projects and seven-hundred developers (each using at least one application)
have opted-in for this service.
We've launched several new applications since our last sitewide mailing.
In total, the following twelve applications are now available to projects
(for project-related activity) and to OSS developers (for personal
activity):
* Trac (wiki, bug tracking, and project management)
* TaskFreak! (task management)
* WordPress (blogging)
* MediaWiki (wiki, useful for documentation)
* phpBB (forums)
* Piwik (web analytics)
* LimeSurvey (surveys)
* dotProject (project management)
* Laconica (microblogging)
* A URL shortening service
* Gallery (image gallery, useful for personal images, pictures of the
development team and for screenshots)
* MantisBT (bug tracking)
As we continue to expand this offering, we make regular announcements to
the Site Status page, at: http://sourceforge.net/sitestatus/
For additional information on our Hosted Apps offering, see:
http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/sitedocs/wiki/Hosted%20Apps
== Site Documentation Migration ==
We've been using Trac internally for the last couple of years and have
found it to be a versatile, well-refined tool. Now that Trac is available
as part of our Hosted Apps offering, we've made the next logical step and
migrated our Site Documentation to the Trac wiki.
Wikis are a great way to store your documentation. They are easy to manage
and are well-tuned for making ongoing improvements to the content.
Since the last major rewrite of our Site Docs was done under the DocManager
tool (nothing like a wiki), we've taken this migration as an opportunity to
clean house. Over the last two weeks, our Support team has rewritten the
vast majority of our Site Documentation for better ease of use, and have
reorganized the docs to leverage the capabilities of the wiki.
The new Site Docs can be seen at:
http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/sitedocs/wiki
We'll be refining the documentation based on your feedback, and the
feedback we receive while providing support to our users. Let us know what
you think by posting a comment at:

== January Project of the Month: TinyMCE ==
The TinyMCE project is about creating a WYSIWYG JavaScript open source
editor. It has the ability to convert HTML TEXTAREA fields or other HTML
elements to editor instances and is very easy to implement. It is included
as default in several open source CMS, such as Wordpress and Joomla.
Together with them, the downloads are up to several million since launch.

When the SF.net team sends out a site-wide email, we sometimes see replies
that look like this: "Hey! I didn't ask to be on this list! You spammer. I
hate you! I hate your dog! (insert other colorful phrases here)." The truth
is, when you registered on SourceForge.net there was a check box that said
"Receive Site-wide updates, low volume." You left it checked when you
submitted the registration form, hence you are receiving this email. We
send these updates every 4 to 6 weeks, so it truly is low volume. However
if you want off, this is not a problem. Simply click on the link.
