Johnston Marklee & Associates

Johnston Marklee & Associates designs and develops contemporary buildings and interiors with a fresh design approach. We shape distinct architectural environments, which reflect a synthesis of each client's needs with the specific circumstances of site, program and economics.

While always immersed in contemporary discourse and historical art and architectural practices, we call upon our network of innovative partners including artists, designers, environmental experts, engineers and builders to shape each project. We engage these other fields as experts on design and we are interested in how design thinking can inform these other fields. Recent projects include an exhibition design at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art entitled nano, which is distinguished by triangulated spatial structures for the works of digital media artist Victoria Vesna and nanoscientist Jim Gimzewski. For the Sale House in Venice California, we worked with the artist Jeff Elrod, to develop a rich palette of saturated pink, turquoise, and orange resin surfaces.

The office is also actively engaged with a host of national institutions, developing innovative architectural environments, reflecting the mission of each organization. In Marfa, Texas, we are developing the internationally acclaimed Writers-in-Residence Studios for Lannan Foundation. Also in Marfa, we are working with city agencies and the library community on the design of a new public library. And in Los Angeles, we have been working with University Elementary School at U.C.L.A., on the long term planning and restoration of the North Yard, a one-half acre learning landscape originally designed by Richard Neutra.
