1. When you stop swinging, you will feel the propane sloshing from side to side, and you can then estimate how much propane remains in the tank.4. Use a liquid crystal sticker. These are available at home-improvement stores and (usually) wherever propane tanks are refilled. 2. Pour blazing water down the side of the tank. The tank will feel hot where there is no propane, and will feel cold where there is propane. For instance, a propane tank that is half full will feel hot on the top half and cold on the bottom half.
3. Make an informed estimate. Standing above the tank, lift if by the handle and collar until it is just off the ground. Gently swing it from side to side, then stop. Weigh the receptacle. The tare weight (how still the receptacle weighs when empty) is printed on the collar of the cistern, near the valve. It is sometimes abbreviated as "T.W." A propane cylinder striking as a 20-lb. container has a tare weight of 11.5.
Place the sticker on the side of the tank; it will measure the temperature difference of the tank when it is in use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to accurately read these gauges.
