Use A Fuel Pump Inside A Grand Cherokee

Many vehicles retain a convenient access panel for accessing the fuel vat, moulding the replacement of a fuel pump a snap. Unfortunately, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is not one of these vehicles. Replacing the fuel pump in a Grand Cherokee requires lifting the vehicle and removing the fuel tank. In addition, the pump can only be removed with a special tool from Jeep.

Instructions

Remove the old gasket from the tank mounting spot.8. Install the new fuel pump module using tool number 6856 to lock it in the fuel tank. Use the floor jack to help you lift the fuel tank to its mounting location underneath the vehicle.

Make sure your fuel tank is near empty; the tank needs to be no more than 1/8 full. If your tank is not, let the engine run until it is. If the Grand Cherokee is inoperable because of the fuel pump, let a professional drain the tank.

3. Remove the gas cap, then pop the hood and remove the fuel pump relay. Crank the engine and let it run until it sputters and shuts off to relieve the fuel system pressure. Once you are finished, disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Lift and support the Grand Cherokee using a floor jack and four jack stands.

5. Remove the mounting bolts from the skid plate (if equipped) to access the fuel tank. Not all models are equipped with a skid plate.

6. Support the center bottom of the fuel tank with the floor jack. Remove the mounting bolts on the fuel pump support brackets. Carefully balance the fuel tank while it is being lowered (have an assistant lower it for you).

7. Disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel tank. Insert Jeep tool number 6856 into the fuel module lockout assembly. Turn the tool to release the fuel module. Remove it from the tank to access the fuel pump.1. Make sure you are comfortable installing your own fuel pump. Because replacing the fuel pump in a Grand Cherokee requires fuel tank removal, the procedure is recommended for those who are mechanically inclined and experienced working on automobiles.2.

Once it is in place, reconnect the fuel supply lines.

9. Replace the support brackets and tighten the mounting bolts to secure the fuel tank. Reinstall the skid plate and mounting bolts.

10. Lower the vehicle back to ground level. Replace the fuel pump relay and reattach the gas cap and negative battery cable.

11. Turn the ignition to the "On" position (without cranking) for a few seconds, and then turn it off. Repeat this procedure a few times to re-pressurize the fuel system.
