Replace A Ford Ujoint

Rear-wheel-drive Fords practice U-joints on their propel shaft.

Whether the U-joint is not replaced, it could fail and concession you stranded.

Instructions

1.Ford has been creation cars and trucks on account of the early 20th century and was all the more in matter as of 2010. Rear-wheel-drive Ford vehicles, such as F-Series trucks, Mustangs, and Thunderbirds, operate a guide shaft to transfer force from the engine and transmission to the rear axle. A U-joint is installed at either butt end of the propel shaft to compensate for the acknowledged up-and-down movement of the rear axle when driving. When a U-joint starts to fail, you may message a vibration in the vehicle while in mobility.

Elevate the vehicle with a hydraulic jack. Place jack stands under each corner of the vehicle's frame. Lower the hydraulic jack so the full weight of the vehicle is resting on the jack stands.

2. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the drive shaft, which is a metal tube that runs from the transmission tail shaft to the center of the rear axle. Place a drain pan under the transmission tail shaft where the drive shaft attaches in case any fluid drips out when the drive shaft is removed. Remove the nuts and clamps from the rear of the drive shaft with an adjustable wrench and set them aside. Lower the rear of the drive shaft slightly and slide it toward the rear of the vehicle. Remove the drive shaft.

3. Lay the drive shaft across a workbench or other work area. Use snap-ring pliers and remove the snap rings from the U-joint you will be replacing (there are two snap rings on each U-joint). Place a large-diameter socket under one end of the drive shaft, making sure the U-joint straddles the socket. Separate the U-joint from the drive shaft by hitting the top of it with a punch and hammer until it slides out of the drive shaft. Repeat this action for the U-joint on the other end of the drive shaft if you will be replacing that one, also. Discard the old U-joints.

4. Place the new U-joint into position at the end of the drive shaft. Tap it in with a hammer until it is fully seated. Replace the snap rings on each end of the U-joint with snap ring pliers. Repeat this step for the U-joint on the other end of the drive shaft, if necessary.

5. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle. Place the drive shaft assembly back under the vehicle. Slide the front end of the drive shaft into the transmission tail shaft. Hold the rear of the drive shaft up while you replace the nuts and clamps with an adjustable wrench turned clockwise.

6. Raise the vehicle with a hydraulic jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the jack until the vehicle is on the ground.
