Steer Clear Of The Tachometer From Focusing On A Ford F150

Learning to shift gears according to the tachometer reading can save Gauze.

Tachometers degree the size of revolutions per minute of the engine driveshaft. This lets the Chauffeur be schooled provided they demand to shift to prevent straining the engine. Many drivers achieve not applicability tachometers when driving, much when vehicles love the Ford F-150 come equipped with one in the instrument cluster. When a tachometer malfunctions it can be a source of distraction for the driver because of the erratic movement of the needle. The choice is to replace the tachometer or, if it is not used, stop the tachometer from working on a Ford F-150.

Instructions

1. Open the hood of the Ford F-150 and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) terminal on the battery. Use a socket wrench to loosen the lock nut on the terminal and pull the cable off the post. Wait 20 minutes for the stored charge to dissipate to prevent electric shock while disconnecting the tachometer or, the air bags from being triggered -- if the truck is so equipped.

2. Pry the trim panels located above the air vents on either side of the steering column out of the dash using a flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to scratch the panels while prying.

3. Use a socket wrench and small socket to remove the screws located in the trim panel recesses.

4. Pull the headlight knob out as far as it can go. Press down on the release tab on the top of the knob shaft with the corner of the head of a flathead screwdriver. Pull the knob completely off.

5. Pull forward on the cover of the dash surrounding the knob and just above the air vent on the right side of the steering column until the fuel tank selector switch can be seen. Older Ford F-150s will have 2 or 3 wires attached to the tachometer using spade connectors. Grab each wire by the connector -- never pull on the wire or it may break -- and pull the spade connector off the rear connection on the tachometer.10.

Lift the dash cover up and off the dash frame to expose the instrument cluster mount.

7. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the 4 screws -- one in each corner -- securing the instrument cluster to the dash frame.

8. Pull the instrument cluster unit forward from the top edge and out as far as it can go without putting strain on the electrical wires plugged into the rear of the gauges in the cluster.

9. Reach behind the tachometer gauge, press the side tabs on the electrical connector plugged into the back of the gauge in and pull the connector out of the plug. Reach behind the switch and pry up on the lock tab of the electrical connector plugged into the back of the switch with one finger. Pull the connector off the switch.6.

Wrap the ends of the disconnected electrical plug or individual wires with electrical tape. Tuck and tape the unplugged connection back up into the wiring harness so it is out of the way but there if the tachometer needs be connected again.

11. Tilt the cluster back into place and secure it with the 4 screws. Replace the dash cover and screws. Slide the headlight knob back onto the shaft making sure the release tab lines up the the hole in the shaft over. Press the trim pieces back into position and reconnect the vehicle's battery.
