1. Look in the corners of your glass pane for any stickers or labels. If you find any, read the labels for any indication that the glass is tempered. Tempered glass is usually properly labeled to satisfy specific building codes.
2. Look at the edge of the glass, if possible.Tempered glass, or safety glass, is formed by sealing two pieces of glass cool with a free resin. Instead of shattering into shards upon breakage adore ordinary glass, tempered glass is designed to clasp cool under flare breakage conditions or shatter into express bitty pieces during severe breakage conditions. Due to these qualities, tempered safety glass is used in such products as automobile windows, shower doors, microwaves and stained glass windows.
Stand directly in front of the pane and slowly move your head towards the pane's edge, all the while looking through the center of the pane. If you see black bands or lines appearing and disappearing within the glass, it is more than likely tempered. These lines are created during the manufacturing process of tempered glass.
4. Break a small piece of the glass away as a last resort. If possible, place the glass pane on a flat surface and slide it so that a small corner or edge is hanging off. Use a small hammer to lightly break away a portion of the window pane. If the glass chips away easily, it is probably normal glass. If the glass cracks but doesn't easily pull away from the window pane, it is probably tempered.
