2014 Mazda CX-5 Review - The 2014 Mazda CX-5 ranks 2 out of 22 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Mazda CX-5, as well as reliability and safety data.
Deft handling makes the 2014 Mazda CX-5 one of the most engaging crossovers to drive, reviewers say. Excellent fuel economy makes it a practical choice, too. For having the best combination of factors that appeal to families, we named the CX-5 our 2014 Best Compact SUV for Families.
Test drivers agree that while the Mazda CX-5’s standard four-cylinder engine is adequate around town, it lacks power on steep hills. A more powerful four-cylinder engine comes on higher trims, and test drivers say that it provides a much needed boost. The standard six-speed manual transmission and available six-speed automatic both shift smoothly, reviewers say. Both drivetrains get excellent fuel economy for the class at 26/32 mpg city/highway for the base automatic front-wheel drive and 24/30 mpg for the automatic all-wheel drive with the more powerful engine. Nimble handling and responsive steering make the CX-5 a joy to drive, reviewers say.

The 2014 CX-5’s interior design is basic, which is a slight turnoff for some, though reviewers agree that high-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces abound. With plenty of room, the cabin is a pleasant place to spend time and controls are easy to access and use, critics say. The CX-5 offers standard keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls and USB/auxiliary ports, as well as standard push-button start, which is notable for the class. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice control is optional, as is a color touch-screen display, a navigation system, a backup camera, a Bose stereo, satellite radio, Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system and a blind spot monitoring system. Many test drivers comment that the optional navigation system can be confusing. Cargo space is average for the class, and test drivers say that there’s plenty of passenger space in both rows.
