The steering gear in a 1998 Dodge Ram is the box that mounts onto the frame of the truck and connects the steering column to the steering linkage. The gears used to make the connection can wear down to the point that they are no longer effective. To fix the issue, you need to rebuild the steering gear or replace it entirely.
