If you're online at all or tune in to the media anywhere, there's a good chance you've heard about social media marketing and how it's the latest greatest thing since email. While social media networks have grown over the last few years - quite a bit - they do have limitations when it comes to marketing your brand, company, product or service. Keep reading to learn the truth and nothing but the truth about this new way to advertise online.

Social Media Marketing Basics

Before you rush into marketing on social media websites, you really need to know the basics. To do this, you're really going to have to spend some time getting to know the sites you want to interact with to market your brand or message. The good news is that you're probably already familiar with the two big names - Facebook and Twitter. Even better news is that there are many other social media websites you can interact on.

How to Market on Social Media

The problem many people have is that they think marketing on social media is going to be easy, that they can pound out message after message and post after post and people will magically start to follow them. This isn't the case. In order for social media to work, you have to follow a process and make sure you don't make any mistakes. Here are some of the things to remember before you market on Facebook, Twitter or another social network site online.

Be Real - The first thing you need to do is make sure you're real. Being honest when marketing on social media is crucial or you're just wasting your time and the time of everyone who reads your posts.

Be Brief - Longer form writing is good for some situations, but marketing on social media websites isn't one of them. Learn to be brief and make sure you have something really useful or interesting to share.

Use Photos - If you have a chance, be sure to use lots of videos. Don't go with stock photography as most people can notice this a mile away. Instead, use some of your own personal photos - just don't go too far.

Use Video - Even better than a still image is using a video. You want to make sure it's a good video and not something like watching a bit of grass growing! In all seriousness, adding video to your marketing efforts is really useful.

Have a Voice - This goes along with being real (and honest), but if you have a voice that connects with people, you're going to have a lot better chance of reaching the people you need to reach with your message.

Following the tips above will help you get more out of your social media marketing campaigns. If you have any advice of your own, leave a comment and let us know.
