Harley-Davidson's versatile 883 V-Twin engine has been in production for over 50 years.
Harley Davidson's entry-level 883 Sportster continues to be successful, with two versions appearing in the 2011 Harley-Davidson line: the 883 Iron and the all-new 883 SuperLow.
Engine Specifications
The heart and soul of the 883 Sportster is an air-cooled, OHV--Pushrod, V-Twin Evolution engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI). This 2-cylinder, 4-stroke powerhouse has a displacement of 53.9 cubic inches and a compression ratio of 8.9:1. The primary belt drive in the 883 Sportster provides a smooth and comfortable ride and its engine torque capacity of 55 ft. lbs. at 3500 rpm is enough power to put a smile on the face of even the most discerning of motorcyclists.
Transmission
The Sportster range is equipped with a manual 5-speed primary drive. According to Harley-Davidson.com, the overall gear ratio is 10.407 for first gear; 7.436 for second; 5.53 for third; 4.583 for fourth; and 3.93 for fifth. The gear box is arguably the best in the Harley-Davidson motorcycle range and gear shifting is smooth with no false neutrals.
Final Verdict
Since 2004, all Sportster models have come with a rubber mounted engine, thus reducing vibration and increasing rider comfort. Add to this excellent fuel economy, and nimble and steady versatility on the road, and you have yourself a great reason to "live the dream."
