Without a doubt transmissions are the most expensive item to repair on a vehicle. Sometimes it is even more expensive to replace a transmission than an entire engine.
Since there is nothing cheap about transmission repair it is highly suggested you take care of the one you currently have. All it takes a little time and effort.
One of the easiest and cost effective ways to maintain your transmission is making sure the fluid inside of it is good and up to the proper level.
Transmission fluid is supposed to be a bright red color. The further is gets away from this color the worse it is. When it starts to turn a dark red it is still okay but by the time it is brown it needs to be changed. This is the substance that lubricates your transmission and if the properties inside of it have worn out then the moving metal parts it lubricates will start to wear out.
The level should be within range as well. You want to make certain that not only is the fluid still has lubricity but there is enough in there to actually do the lubricating. Some people do not check the level and are therefore ridding around 5-7 quarts under the optimal mark.
So how to you get a proper read?
First you have to turn the car on. That is major difference between checking convention engine oil and transmission fluid. With regular motor oil the car should be turned off when you are checking it. With transmission fluid the vehicle should be in park (or neutral with Dodge vehicles) with the car on.
Second, take the transmission dipstick out of the hole and wipe it off. You should be able to distinguish this dipstick from the others because the end will be red.
Third, stick the dipstick back inside the hole, let it sit there for a couple seconds, and then pull it back out. The fluid should be within the hash marks. If it a little overfilled do not worry about it.
This is a procedure that should be done at least once a month. If you bring your vehicle to a quick lube center they should and will do this for you. You might be charged extra for the fluid.
No matter if you do it or have a friend do it make sure it gets done. Otherwise start saving your pennies because you will need them later on.
