Where Is the Fuel Pump in a 1993 240SX?

The fuel pump on the 1993 Nissan 240SX is located in the fuel tank. Removal and replacement of the fuel pump does not require removing the fuel tank; there is a fuel pump access door located under the rear seat of the vehicle. No special tools are required, but the fuel pressure must be relieved before removing the fuel pump.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Open the lid on the relay box located near the battery. Remove the fuel pump fuse by pulling up gently from the relay box. Put the key in the ignition and crank the engine for 15 seconds to relieve the fuel pressure. Remove the negative battery cable with the socket and ratchet.

    2

Open the trunk lid and remove any luggage from the trunk. Remove the screws and metal bracket holding the carpet to the back of the upper rear seat with a screwdriver. Pull the carpet away from the back of the upper rear seat.

    3

Get into the vehicle. Pull up on the latches at each corner of the lower rear seat at the same time to release the seat from the interior. Remove the lower rear seat. Remove the black padding on the floor board that was under the lower rear seat.

    4

Pull on the hinge release levers at the corners on the top of the upper rear seat to fold the seat back down. Remove the four bolts securing the bottom of the upper rear seat with the socket and ratchet. Remove the upper rear seat.

    5

Lay the tarp down over the carpet that remains on the floorboard in the rear. Remove the bolts securing the round fuel pump access panel to the floorboard with the socket and ratchet.

    6

Disconnect the fuel pump electrical harness by squeezing on the tab and pulling the harness from the connector on the fuel pump. Loosen the fuel clamps securing each fuel line to the fuel pump and remove the fuel supply, fuel return and EVAP lines from the fuel pump.

    7

Remove the fuel pump mounting screws with the screwdriver. Lift the fuel pump from the gas tank and wrap it up with shop rags to help prevent any dripping.

Installation

    8

Install the new fuel O-ring onto the new fuel pump. Set the fuel pump into the fuel tank and line up the mounting holes with the holes in the fuel tank. Tighten the mounting screws with the screwdriver. Torque them to 1.5 to 2.0 foot-pounds.

    9

Install the fuel return, fuel supply, and EVAP hose onto the new fuel pump and secure them with the fuel clamps. Plug the electrical wiring harness into the new fuel pump.

    10

Set the round fuel pump access door over the fuel pump access hole and tighten the mounting bolts with the socket and ratchet. Remove the tarp, being careful not to spill any gas that dripped onto the tarp during fuel pump removal.

    11

Set the upper rear seat into the down position. Line up the mounting holes on the seat back to the holes on the lower seat hinge. Install the mounting bolts and tighten with the socket and ratchet. Lift the rear seat back to the rear dash and push on each corner to secure the upper seat hinges.

    12

Set the lower rear seat into place and pull on the latches as the seat is pushed toward the rear of the vehicle and release the latches.

    13

Hold the trunk carpet over the rear seat back and install the screws through the bracket with the screwdriver.

    14

Install the fuel pump fuse into the relay box and replace the relay box lid. Install the negative battery cable and tighten with the socket and ratchet.

    15

Turn the ignition key to the "On" position and wait 15 seconds then turn the key back off. Complete this cycle three times to build fuel pressure and then start the vehicle. Inspect for any leaks.
