Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain - A Town Under the Rock

The town of Setenil de las Bodegas is an unusual town in Spain. An important part of the town has grown under a huge rock. Around 3,000 inhabitants there are living quite literally under the huge rock. It is believed that people have been living under the rock since prehistoric times.

Interestingly, people chose to settle under the rock in Setenil de las Bodegas for practical reasons. The natural caves of Setenil turned out to be ideal living places to keep out the heat in summer and the cold in the winter. People have used this natural conditions to build living quarters in the caves. This has another benefit as they don't need to build entire houses to keep out the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. All they needed to build was a facade to turn the caves into ideal living quarters.
