Kummakivi - A Strange Giant Rock in Finland

Kummakivi is strange giant rock at Valtola in Southern Savonia, Finland. The giant rock balances precariously upon another seemingly smooth, curved rock. The immense monolith is surrounded by the dense forest. This is an amazing geological formation and the name Kummakivi itself means strange rock in Finnish.

The rock was probably left in that position by a glacier during the last ice age. This rock and others like it are known as "glacial erratics". The site of the rock and the lower stone are neatly kept from encroaching moss and undergrowth. However, the larger rock on top is weathered from ages. Kummakivi has become a popular spot in Finland because of its mystical and breathtaking balancing.
