Instructions for Changing Motor Oil in the Harley Heritage

The Harley Heritage Softail was introduced in 1986 and included the new 1340 cc Evolution engine. It also featured the rubber vibration-damping drivetrain. The frequency of oil changes on the Harley Heritage depends on temperature and mileage. The owner's manual gives an accurate scale for determining the time intervals between oil changes. In lieu of the owner's manual, use 3,000 miles as a timeline for changing the oil. The bike must be completely upright in order to drain all the oil. Use the oil filter number KN171B. Always replace the oil filter when doing an oil change on a Harley-Davidson.

Instructions

    1

Start the bike and allow it to run for 5 minutes to thin the oil. Place the drain pan under the oil filter on the left front of the motor. Turn the filter counterclockwise with the oil filter wrench to remove it. Once loose, spin it off by hand.

    2

Place a little oil on the new filter's O-ring and spin the filter on clockwise until good and tight by hand. Move the drain pan back just in front of the rear tire and under the drain plug on the right side frame.

    3

Remove the oil tank cap and dipstick to hasten the oil draining. Remove the 7/8-inch oil drain plug with the wrench. Hold the bike erect and allow all the oil to drain out. Replace and tighten the drain plug.

    4

Fill the oil tank with 3 quarts of 20/50 weight oil. Install the dipstick and oil tank cap.
