How to Wire a 240Z Distributor

When the Datsun 240Z first came out, it cost about $3,500, and while it was considered a sports car, the people at Datsun referred to it as their "personal" GT car. It became known as the Z-car and was great for transportation from coast to coast as well as sporty drives on curvy roads. When doing a tune-up or removing the distributor, you should always number the spark plug wires and the distributor cap towers, so you don't have to figure out the firing order when you put things back together.

Instructions

    1

Locate the No. 1 cylinder at the front of the straight-6 engine. It is closest to the radiator. Number the cylinders 1 through 6 from the front to the rear.

    2

Remove the distributor cap, using the screwdriver. If the rotor is pointing directly at the No. 1 cylinder, skip this step. If not, rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks line up on the crankshaft pulley and the rotor is pointing at the No. 1 cylinder.

    3

Mark the bottom of the distributor base under the center of the rotor's point. Reinstall the distributor cap. The tower over the mark is the No. 1 tower. Working in a counterclockwise direction, number the towers as follows: 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4.

    4

Grab the plug wire on the No. 1 cylinder and route it up to the distributor. Press the boot onto the No. 1 terminal. Grab the wire on the No. 5 cylinder and route it up to the distributor. Press the boot onto the No. 5 terminal. Repeat the process for the rest of the wires.

    5

Plug in the distributor's wiring harness connector. Start the vehicle to ensure it runs properly.
