How to Replace an Hour Meter

How to Replace an Hour Meter

Hour meters are devices used to track how long an engine has been running. They log the hours until the next scheduled maintenance event. These 2 inch, round gauges are installed in a main control panel so they can be monitored along with the other engine functions. Hour meters are powered by a signal from the alternator. This is so the hour meter tracks accurate engine time. If the alternator is turning, then the engine is running too. Connecting the hour to any other source will lead to unnecessary time accumulated on the meter.

Instructions

    1

Remove the negative battery lead from the battery or, if installed, disconnect the battery connect switch.

    2

Disconnect the two wires from the back of the meter. Loosen and remove the mounting nuts from the mounting terminals on the back of the meter.

    3

Remove the meter from the panel. Slide the new meter into the panel. Slide the mounting bracket onto the back of the meter. Secure the mounting bracket to the meter with the nuts and washers provided.

    4

Connect the positive wire on the positive terminal on the hour meter. Connect the negative wire on the negative terminal on the meter.

    5

Connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post.
