How to Repair the Odometer on a 1997 Corolla

If the odometer on your 1997 Toyota Corolla is experiencing problems, there are three possible reasons: the instrument cluster fuse has blown out, the cluster's connector is loose, or the odometer or cluster itself is no longer functional; you will have to replace the entire instrument cluster. Although fixing the first two issues is inexpensive, replacing the instrument cluster can be quite costly, depending on where you purchase a replacement. Junkyards may have used clusters, but there is no guarantee that those will work properly. You could also contact Toyota directly in order to purchase a replacement instrument cluster.

Instructions

    1

Lift the Corolla's hood and remove the fuse box's cover. Locate the instrument cluster in the slot 17 of the fuse block and remove it with a fuse extraction-tool.

    2

Install a replacement 15A fuse into the fuse box and reattach the cover.

    3

Use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

    4

Open the Corolla's driver-side door and remove the two screws from the plastic panel above the instrument cluster with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the plastic panel from the Corolla.

    5

Remove the four screws from the instrument cluster with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the instrument cluster out of the Corolla.

    6

Reach behind the Corolla's instrument cluster and make sure the two wiring connectors are plugged into the rear of the Corolla. If not, plug them into the cluster. If the odometer is still malfunctioning, you will need to replace the instrument cluster.

    7

Disconnect the cluster's two wiring connectors and remove it from the Corolla. Place a replacement cluster into the Corolla and reattach the two wiring connectors.

    8

Reattach the four screws to the instrument cluster. Reattach the plastic panel and its two clusters. Reconnect the negative battery cable and close the hood.
