How to Remove a Pontiac's Steering Knuckle

The steering knuckle of your Pontiac is mounted between the ball joints underneath the vehicle and is what allows the wheels to pivot. If the steering knuckle malfunctions, you may find that you have a difficult time steering your Pontiac. If this occurs, you need to remove your steering knuckle in order to repair or replace it. It should only take 45 minutes to perform this task.

Instructions

    1

Use a jack to raise the Pontiac to remove the wheels. Place two jack stands at the front of the vehicle to support it.

    2

Remove the front wheel's nuts with a wheel wrench. Remove the wheel on the side of which you will be replacing the steering knuckle.

    3

Remove the locking hub by using a socket wrench to remove its securing bolts. Remove the bolts from the spindle as well. Pull off both the locking hub and the spindle.

    4

Use a socket wrench to disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Remove the knuckle-to-steering arm nuts and bolts and pull the steering away from the steering knuckle.

    5

Remove the cotter pins from the knuckle with pliers. Use a socket wrench to remove the nuts from the ball joints.

    6

Insert the pry bar in between the ball joints and the yoke of the steering knuckle. Pry upwards to separate the knuckle. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
