How to Put a Power Steering Belt on a 2001 Hyundai Accent

The power steering pump belt on a 2001 Hyundai Accent also travels around the crankshaft pulley and the air conditioner compressor pulley. The belt is tensioned on the inside of all three pulleys by an adjustable idler pulley. The belt is loosened and tightened from the adjustment bolt located on the side of the idler pulley. Once the idler pulley-locking bolt is loosened, the idler pulley adjustment bolt can move the idler pulley up and down to either loosen or tighten the tension in the belt.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood on the 2001 Hyundai Accent and secure it in place. Wait about an hour or so for the engine to cool down.

    2

Locate the idler pulley near the power steering pump. The idler pulley is made up of a pulley, an adjustment bracket and a adjustment bolt, and is located under the power steering pump pulley. Loosen the lock-bolt in the middle of the idler pulley with a ratchet and a socket, just loose enough so that the pulley can move up and down.

    3

Turn the adjustment bolt on the side of the idler pulley counter-clockwise with a ratchet and a socket to loosen the tension from the old belt. Once the belt is loose enough, slide it off the idler pulley. Slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley, the air conditioner compressor pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Pull the belt out of the engine compartment.

    4

Compare the old belt to the new belt to make sure that the new belt has the proper width and length. Slide the new power steering pump belt around the crankshaft pulley, the air conditioner compressor pulley, the power steering pump pulley and the idler pulley.

    5

Turn the idler pulley adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket to tighten it. Once the belt is tight, check the tension on the belt by pushing inward on the belt with your hand. The belt should have no more than a half-inch of slack to be considered properly tensioned. Continue adjusting the belt clockwise if the belt has more than a half-inch of slack.

    6

Re-tighten the idler pulley locking bolt in the center of the idler pulley with the ratchet and socket. Inspect the belt to make sure that it is seated inside each of the pulleys. Crank the engine and watch the belt as it travels around each pulley to ensure that it remains seated. Turn the engine off and recheck the tension on the belt. Adjust the belt as needed to maintain the half-inch of slack. Close the hood.
