How to Change the Coil on a 2004 Passat

The Volkswagen Dasher, which the rest of the world knew as the Passat, was VWs self-created bailout plan, as its once-popular Beetle was fading away. The Dasher only lasted seven production years, but it paved the way for the Passat to arrive in 1990, two years after the makers 7-year-long experiment with the Quantum. The 2004 Passat came standard with a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine that cranked out 170 horsepower. A set of four coil packs sat atop the spark plugs delivering the spark needed to ignite the air-and-fuel mixture in the engine. Replacing one of the four coil packs requires a special tool, but the process is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the three retaining screws on the top of the engine cover with a Phillips screwdriver, and pull the engine cover upward to remove it from the engine.

    2

Find the four ignition coil packs on the top, center of the valve cover.

    3

Press and hold the unlocking button on the wiring harness connecting to the failed ignition coil pack, and unplug the harness from the coil pack.

    4

Press the open end of the coil pack puller, Volkswagen tool No. T40039, downward onto the top of the coil pack until it has a firm grasp on the ribs on the top of the coil pack.

    5

Pull upward on the coil pack puller to remove it from the spark plug.

    6

Align the boot on the base of the replacement coil pack with the top of the spark plug and position the coil pack so its receptacle faces toward the coil packs wiring harness. Press down on the coil pack until you feel it click onto the top of the spark plug.

    7

Plug the coil pack wiring harness into the receptacle on the replacement coil pack.

    8

Set the engine cover back onto the top of the engine, aligning its retaining screws with the screw holes in the covers mounts. Tighten the three retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver until they are snug.
