PS4 - The PlayStation 4 Console from Sony

The PlayStation 4 is the next-generation video game console from Sony Computer Entertainment. The long anticipated PS4 was announced as the successor to the PlayStation 3 during a high-profile event in New York on February 20, 2013. It is the second eighth-generation console to be officially confirmed as the first was Nintendo's Wii U. The PlayStation 4 will also be the fourth home console in Sony's PlayStation series.

The PlayStation 4 is expected to be officially launched in the fourth quarter of 2013. It will compete with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One. The next-generation PlayStation console will be a powerful machine capable of some very showy graphics. Sony revealed some of Playstation 4's Hardware Specs at the PlayStation 4 Announcement on February 20, 2013. The company has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and "next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. Even though the company shared some details about the PlayStation 4 in February, it didn’t show what the console would look like.

Moving away from the Cell architecture, the PlayStation 4 will be the first in the Sony series to feature compatibility with the x86-64 instruction set, which is a widely used platform common in many modern PCs. The company said the PS4 would essentially be a “supercharged PC,” much like the Xbox.

The PS4 will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. The system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX" port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and other social features. While no hard drive numbers have been announced, Sony has stated that the PS4 will have "a very large hard drive in every console."

Sony promises that the PlayStation 4 will boot up and go to sleep instantaneously. It's intended to almost eradicate loading and download times. The PlayStation 4 platform is expected to have intelligent personalization and it will learn how individuals make use of the hardware. It will also have deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features.

There are a lot of rumors about PlayStation 4's specifications on the web. It is rumored that PlayStation 4 development kits are based around AMD's A10 chip - an APU that includes both four CPU cores and a fairly capable GPU. It is rumored to have a significantly-increased amount of system memory and to include support for high-resolution displays.

Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends elsewhere can watch. You can also run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony’s mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita.
