How to Restore a Flaking Clear Coat

Clear coat flakes off for several reasons, ranging from a vehicle's old age, to the vehicle being parked in direct sunlight and affected by UV rays, to a the poor quality of the existing clear coat. The only way to completely rid your car of any flaking or from further flaking, you need to have it completely repainted. There are ways to restore a flaking clear coat to make it look almost as good as new, though the results won't last as long as a new paint job.

Instructions

    1

Sand the clear coat along the edges of the flaking areas. Use wet 1,200-grit sandpaper and hold a running water hose above it with your other hand. Keep the sandpaper wet so that buildup doesn't scratch the car's surface.

    2

Rinse the car and let it dry completely. Check to see if the white flakey clear coat is visible. If it is, sand again. If the white isn't noticeable, move to the next step.

    3

Pour a half-dollar sized amount of liquid rubbing compound onto the buffing pad on a high-speed buffer. Place the buffer on the surface that you just sanded and begin buffing. Work the buffer in small, circular motions over the sanded areas, until all of the compound is gone.

    4

Remove the buffing pad from the buffer and put the polishing pad on. Use car polish over the buffed area to blend it with the surrounding surface of the car. Work the car polish into the paint in the same way the you applied the compound.
