How to Replace a Door Window in a '98 Tahoe

If your 1998 Tahoe has a door window that's cracked, chipped, has deep scratches or is shattered, chances are you'll want to replace it. Two bolts, which are easy to remove, hold the glass in place. Getting to those bolts and removing and replacing the glass is much harder. Most auto-glass shops can perform this job for you for a price, but if you're handy with a wrench and have a decent working knowledge of automotive repair, you can replace the door window in your 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe yourself.

Instructions

    1

Remove the Tahoe's power switches for the lock and window from the door using the trim tool. Unplug each switch from the corresponding wiring harness by hand.

    2

Extract the Tahoe's door panel-retaining screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the panel upward 2 inches and then remove it from the door by hand.

    3

Extract the glass-retaining bolts from the window regulator using the socket set. You'll need to reach into the door with through the access holes to get at these bolts.

    4

Lift the window glass up into the window frame by hand. Tilt it towards the front of the Tahoe and then pull it out of the door, through the window frame, from the outside of the Chevy. Set the old glass down somewhere where it won't shatter and you won't cut yourself on it.

    5

Tilt the new glass forward and insert the leading lower edge into the door through the window frame from the outside. Carefully lower the glass all the way into the door. Bolt the glass to the Tahoe's window regulator using the socket set.

    6

Reinstall the Tahoe's door panel by reversing your removal procedure.
