How to Replace a 2002 F-350 7.3 Diesel Water Pump

A faulty water pump can cause coolant leaks, overheating and unusual engine noise. The water pump in the 2002 F-350 7.3L diesel is easy to replace--only a few components must be removed to reach it. A replacement pump can be purchased or ordered from most auto-supply stores.

Instructions

    1

Unhook both negative (black) battery cables in the engine compartment.

    2

Remove the radiator cap and open the plug on the lower back side of the radiator. Allow the coolant to drain into an appropriate container. Unbolt and remove the shroud from the radiator. The engine fan and fan clutch are a single unit. Unbolt the assembly from the engine and remove.

    3

Remove the drive belt. Place a socket wrench on the pulley directly below the alternator and rotate clockwise to relieve the tension.

    4

Remove the bolts from the water pump pulley. The pulley is in the center, second from the bottom. Remove the pulley.

    5

Squeeze the tab on the pump&039;s electrical connector and unplug it. Squeeze the tabs on the clamp connecting the heater hose to the pump to loosen and remove the hose.

    6

Unbolt and remove the water pump. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the water pump bolts to 15 ft-lbs. and the pulley to 12 to 18 ft-lbs..
