How to Remove the Brake Drums on a Toyota Tundra

Removing the brake drums from your Toyota Tundra requires you to remove the rear tires from the truck. Access to the brake shoes, hardware and slave cylinders requires removal of the drums as well. If a drum becomes excessively worn or cracked, or has other damage on it, you can replace the drums with new ones. Replacements are available from the dealer or aftermarket from most auto parts stores.

Instructions

    1

Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your Toyota with a lug wrench but do not remove them from the wheel studs yet. Position a jack under the rear of the truck and raise it until the rear tires are off the ground.

    2

Place a set of jack stands under the rear axle tubes to support the truck, then lower the jack. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs then pull the tire and wheel off the truck. Set them aside for now.

    3

Grasp the brake drum with one hand on either side and pull the drum straight off the wheel studs and brake shoes. Set the drum aside and move to the opposite side of the truck. Repeat the process to remove the second drum.
