How to Check the Transmission Fluid on a 1996 VW Passat VR6 GLX

VW considers the transmission on a 1996 VW Passat VR6 GLX as sealed for life. The transmission is completely sealed and barring any transmission leaks, never needs filling. The transmission holds approximately 6 quarts of transmission fluid. Problems with the transmission that occur are internal and need to go to the shop for repairs. Drain and refill the transmission, if you desire to do so. Purchase a new filler plug and drain plug seal each time from the dealer.

Instructions

    1

Move the car to a level area if it isn't already.

    2

Open the hood and look at the top of the transmission behind the bell housing. Notice a black round rubber plug in a small recess. Pry this plug out using a common screwdriver.

    3

Look in the opening at the transmission fluid level. It should be one inch below the top of the transmission. Add transmission fluid if necessary to bring it to this level.

    4

Insert the new plug to seal the transmission. Check for leaks. Since it is a sealed unit, the fluid level should never drop.
