How to Check Engine Core Plugs

If the cooling system on your vehicle is note serviced on a regular basis, it is important to check the engine's core plugs. The plugs, which are made of steel, can become rusty when the cooling system's filled with water after a leak is repaired. It is best to check the engine's core plugs as part of your routine vehicle maintenance.

Instructions

    1

Inspect the core plugs for any sign of fluid leakage.

    2

Run your fingers around the core plugs feeling for dampness.

    3

Use a flashlight to illuminate any areas where core plugs are hard to see. Some engines have them located on the back as well as on the sides.

    4

Hold an inspection mirror near the core plugs that are not easy to see. You'll need to use a flashlight to help locate the plugs.

    5

Shine the flashlight onto the mirror and the light will bounce onto the core plug. If there is a leak, it will reflect back onto the mirror.
