How to Change the Lower Radiator Hose in an Impala SS

How to Change the Lower Radiator Hose in an Impala SS

If you've been planning to flush the coolant system in your Chevy Impala SS, you must first remove the lower radiator hose so the fluid flushes through the engine block and you can remove it from the engine. Failing to remove the hose before an engine flush can create pressure, which can burst a hose or radiator. You can remove the lower radiator hose fairly quickly with a few basic hand tools.

Instructions

    1

Drive your Impala SS onto a set of ramps to gain ground clearance to access the lower radiator hose. Apply the emergency break to keep the vehicle from rolling off the ramps while you work on it.

    2

Place a catch can or a bucket under the radiator drain located on the lower left-hand side of the radiator. Open the drain by turning it counterclockwise with a pair of pliers.

    3

Remove the retaining clamp that holds the hose onto the radiator with a flat-head screwdriver and then pull the hose off the radiator. Drain the fluid from the radiator hose into the bucket.

    4

Remove the retaining clamp that secures the radiator hose onto the engine block with a flat-head screwdriver and pull the radiator hose off of the engine block. Drain the fluid from the engine block into the bucket.
