Located in the city of Malmo in Sweden, the HSB Turning Torso is one of the world's largest residential structures. It is the highest building in Sweden and the third tallest residential building in Europe. With a height of 623 feet (190 meters), the HSB Turning Torso is one of the world's tallest skyscrapers.
Designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the project was based on a sculpture called the Twisting Torso. This concrete and steel structure is a 54 storied building. Construction of this unique tower started in 2001 and completed in 2005.
The most prominent feature of the HSB Turning Torso is that the building turns 90 degrees clockwise from bottom to top. The twisting form is composed of nine box units, shaped like cubes with triangular tips. This twisting building has nine segments where each segment is a five-story pentagon. These segments of the building twist 10 degrees clockwise resulting in the topmost segment twisting 90 degrees with respect to the ground floor. For this reason, the HSB Turning Torso is regarded as one of most significant twisting towers in the world.
