How to Troubleshoot No Spark on an ATV

Few things tend to be more annoying than going through all the trouble to get your ATV out at a track or field, unpack everything, and then find out it wont start due to a lack of combustion spark. However, there are a number of steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem before calling it a day and giving up. With a few basic tools and replacement parts you can possibly be up and running in a couple of minutes.

Instructions

    1

Locate the choke cable handle and pull on it. Try to start the ATV after the choke adds extra gas to the carburetor. Open the gas tank and confirm there is sufficient fuel in the tank if there is no ignition. Confirm your fuel lever is also moved to the on position to let the fuel flow.

    2

Open up the engine panel and locate the ignition coil unit, also known as a CDI, and spark plug wire going to the spark plug. Check that each end of the cable is securely installed and not loose. Pull off the spark plug cap and loosen the spark plug with a socket wrench. Pull it out and examine the tip. Replace it and re-tighten with a new plug if the tip is oily or gunky. Replace the spark cap. Retry the engine start.

    3

Loosen and pull the plug out again. Insert a spark plug tester tool instead. Kick start the engine. Look at the tool end to confirm the electrical ignition is working properly when the tool bulb lights up on each kick. Unscrew the tool and re-install the spark plug again. Re-install the spark cap.

    4

Go over to the battery side. Open the panel. Loosen the battery connections with a screwdriver. Pick up the battery after releasing the battery strap. Check the water levels inside the battery. Add diluted water if the levels are low. Recharge the battery with a battery trickle charger.

    5

Take the battery off the charger after an hour. Re-install the unit in the battery tray and attach the battery strap. Re-connect the terminal end wiring. Try starting the engine again.

    6

Take the ATV to a repair place to check the ignition and electrical if the vehicle still wont start.
