The computer, or ECM, of your 1995 BMW 540 vehicle stores information such as the radio presets, the temperature settings and whether the check engine light is turned on. If you need to reset any of this information, you will need to reset your BMW's computer. Thankfully, this can be completed simply by disconnecting the battery from the vehicle and waiting ten minutes. Once the time has elapsed, you can reconnect the battery and your computer will be reset.

Park the vehicle on a flat surface and turn off the engine.
2Open the trunk and locate the battery on the right side of the trunk. Remove the cover from the battery.
3Use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery. Allow ten minutes to pass. Reconnect the negative terminal cable to the battery, reattach the battery cover and close the trunk lid.
