How to Replace a VT700 Stator

The VT-700 Shadow is a cruiser-style motorcycle manufactured by Honda. Honda introduced the Shadow in 1983 in an attempt to meet market needs for a good, solid street cruiser. The Shadow fit that bill with a liquid-cooled, V-twin engine. The stator on the Shadow is a part of the cycle's alternator charging system. The stator is a metal ring wound in copper windings that encircles the flywheel. If the stator is damaged, the alternator's ability to recharge the battery will be compromised.

Instructions

    1

Take off the Shadow's seat by removing the two bolts in the rear with an adjustable wrench. Slide the seat back and up to remove it.

    2

Remove the negative battery cable with the adjustable wrench.

    3

Use an Allen wrench to remove the lower fairing bolts and remove the fairings.

    4

Unplug the plastic wiring harness just outside the alternator cover. Then use an Allen wrench to remove the alternator cover bolts. Pull the alternator cover off.

    5

Use the socket set to remove the stator's retaining bolt. Remove the old stator, and then bolt new the stator in place. Replace the alternator cover and bolt it back down, too.

    6

Connect the plastic wiring harness to the new stator.

    7

Replace the fairings, negative battery cable and the seat.
