How to Replace a Thermostat in a Ford Bronco

How to Replace a Thermostat in a Ford Bronco

When your Ford Bronco overheats, it is usually due to a failure with the mechanical thermostat that is located inside of the intake manifold. This can be detrimental to your Bronco if you use it for hauling a trailer or if you have altered it by adding a lift kit and larger tires. With the extra stress on the engine, if it overheats, it can cost thousands to repair. Replacing the thermostat with one that regulates temperature correctly will prevent all of this from happening.

Instructions

    1

Locate the clip that secures the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing. The housing is bolted onto the intake manifold of the Bronco. Remove the clip by squeezing the ends together and then pull the radiator hose off the intake manifold.

    2

Remove the thermostat housing by loosening the two bolts that hold it onto the intake manifold with a box wrench. Pull up on the housing to separate it from the intake manifold.

    3

Pull the old thermostat gasket off the intake manifold of the Bronco and discard it. Place the new thermostat gasket onto the intake manifold.

    4

Pull the old thermostat out of the intake manifold and place the new one into the intake manifold. The thermostat is not bolted into place. It sits on a machined lip inside of the intake manifold.

    5

Place the thermostat housing onto the intake manifold and bolt it into place.

    6

Place a band clamp onto the radiator hose and slide the hose back onto the thermostat intake. Secure the clamp by tightening it clockwise with a screwdriver.
