The 2000 Toyota Corolla thermostat is a great entry-level repair that can be completed in a relatively short amount of time. If you've decided that you want to avoid the high costs of repair garages and you'd like to tackle a few jobs on your own, then starting off with replacing the thermostat is a great idea. You'll need basic tools and a little bit of time. Changing the thermostat yourself will not only save you money, it can prevent catastrophic failure that could cost you thousands of dollars in the future.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the housing cover for the thermostat by finding the location where the radiator hose connects to the intake manifold of the 2000 Corolla's engine. Due to the location of the thermostat cover, the radiator hose does not have to be removed from the housing to change the thermostat.
2Remove the two bolts that hold the housing to the Corolla's intake manifold. Save the bolts; they will be used again. Lift the thermostat housing off the intake manifold and push it to the side so you can access the thermostat.
3Pull the thermostat out of the hole it sits in by pulling up on it. The thermostat should pull out easily. Pull the paper thermostat gasket off the machined surface of the intake manifold. The gasket sits on the surface of the manifold, not on the thermostat. Both items can be thrown away. They will not be reused.
4Put the new thermostat into place with the end stamped "top" sitting outside the intake manifold. If the thermostat is placed into the intake manifold upside down, it will not work properly and you risk cracking the housing when bolting it down.
5Place the new thermostat gasket on to the machined mating surface of the intake manifold, then bolt the thermostat cover back into place using the old bolts. The thermostat cover is cast metal, and it will break if it is tightened too tightly.
