A submersible car that can be driven both on land and under water. You've seen such cars in movies. But, have you seen a real submersible car? You might have, if you're a lucky one. I'm talking about the sQuba - world's first real underwater car.
Developed by Swiss company Rinspeed, the sQuba is regarded as the world's first real underwater car. It was unveiled for the first time in public at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2008. The inspiration came from Lotus Esprit, an animated car model used in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. It was a fake car that could be driven under water. Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht turned this movie fake to a real underwater car thirty years after its first appearance in the movie.
The design of the sQuba is based on a Lotus Elise sports car. On land, the sQuba is powered by its electric powertrain, utilizing rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Under water, it is powered by twin electric-powered propellers supplemented by two Seabob water jets. It can be driven up to 10 meter under water. The sQuba is a green vehicle with zero-emission. It utilizes an Ibeo laser-guided autonomous driving system.
The sQuba can achieve a top speed of 120 km/h when driven on road. On the surface of water, the top speed is 6 km/h and underwater it is 3 km/h. The sQuba, the first underwater car, is one of the amazing and unique cars in the world.
